The MEK argues that United Nations and the United States are responsible for the protection of some 3000 residents in the camp as the US has made personal commitments to each and everyone residing there to protect them. The residents are also considered asylum seekers and “persons of concern” by the United Nations refugee agency, the UNHCR, due to multiple attacks on their camps during past few years. About 50 residents died during two attacks by Iraqi army on their former camp Ashraf in 2009 and 2011.
The unarmed residents of Camp Liberty are members of the MEK which is the main Iranian opposition movement in exile that aims to overthrow the Iranian clerical regime in order to replace it with a democratic government.
