Iran: Number of People Addicted to Drugs Rises Dramatically

The Islamic Republic of Iran is home to almost three million drug users according to the country’s Drug Control Organisation. 

State media reports say that there are around 2.8 million people in a country of 80 million that use drugs on a regular basis. Six years ago, this figure was 1.3 million – more than half the current number.

MEPs Call for Iran to Be Brought to Justice for Crimes Against Humanity and Human Rights Abuses

A large number of members of European parliament released a statement regarding Iran’s abuse of human rights. The 265 MEPs said that they condemned Iran’s disregard for human rights and called for an inquiry to be commissioned so that the 1988 massacre in which more than 30,000 political prisoners were executed can be investigated. They also want to see those responsible for this crime against humanity face justice and stand before the International Court of Justice.

Unemployment Crisis Continues in Iran

The real unemployment rate is several times higher than what has been officially announced, and it’s not going to decrease in the near future, according to former head of Tehran Economics University.

The regime’s labor minister also earlier announced that the country’s unemployment rate will not decrease in the next few years.

Dozens Faced Flogging for Eating Food in Public During Ramadan

In Iranian town Qazvin around twenty people have been flogged for eating and/or drinking in public during the fasting time of Ramadan.  

On top of these twenty people that were flogged, there were also dozens of dossiers set up for the same activity, according to state media reports.

Iran: Prisoner of Conscience Still Being Victimised by Authorities

On Monday, Amnesty International published an Urgent Action notice update regarding the case of a female political prisoner in Iran who faces a potential extended prison sentence for demanding justice for her siblings who were executed during the 1988 massacre in Iran. 

Maryam Akbari Monfared has been told she may receive three more years in prison and may be removed to a remote one. 

She has been serving a 15-year sentence in Evin prison in the country’s capital since 2009.
