Women face further and increasing repression in Iran

Two sisters arrested in March 2014 have been sentenced to 10 years and six months imprisonment for being of Bahaii faith. Nika and Nava Kholousi, prisoners of conscience, are being held in Vakilabad Prison of Mashhad.

Kajal Hosseini, a 38-year-old student of computer sciences at University of Tabriz, has been held by the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence for five months and her family have no information about the charges against her or her condition. 

In Hamedan (western Iran), Mohammad Mahdian Nassab, commander of the area’s State Security Force, on 28th September threatened to impound vehicles belonging to ‘mal-veiled’ women. He said: “There are eight virtue-and-the-veil stations set up by Hamedan’s Police where women from the religious seminary and the moral security police, are present.” During the past month over 180 vehicles belonging to improperly dressed people were impounded on Hamedan’s Eram Blvd.

In other news, children’s and civil rights activist, Atena Daemi, was sentenced to five years in prison for association and conspiring against the state. Ms. Daemi, 27, was arrested on 21st October 2014. After 16 months of incarceration she was released on bail bond on 15th February this year.

On 29th September a woman was executed on the Central Prison of Orumiyeh (north-western Iran). Molouk Noori who has been imprisoned in the women's ward of Orumiyeh Prison was hanged along with seven other prisoners. This brings the total number of women executed during Rouhani’s tenure to 71.
