EU-3 and the US Call to UN for action

iran NucearThursday January 12, 2006, Berlin (Stop Fundamentalism) – The three foreign ministers of European countries, Britain, France and Germany held a joint conference today in Berlin to announce their decision to refer Islamic Republic of Iran to the U.N. Security Council.

The EU-3 ministers at a press conference in Berlin called the negotiations with Iran over its nuclear activities at a “dead end.”

The ministers called for a special session of the International Atomic Energy Agency to act on their request of referral only two days after Iran broke U.N. seals at a uranium enrichment plant and said it was resuming nuclear research after a two-year freeze.

Iran is accused of covering-up 18 years of nuclear activities while it was a signatory of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and suspicious production of weapons grade uranium.

In Washington, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, joined her European counter parts, and called on the United Nations for action.

Rice declined to say whether the United States has the necessary votes in the Security Council to punish Iran. But she said, "It is very clear that everyone believes a very important threshold has been cleared."

There was no immediate response from the Iranian government, which previously has said it is not worried by the threat of U.N. sanctions.
