Senior official: Iran is becoming a regional power able to confront US with suicide operations

Iran’s nuclear issue is expected to be discussed at the Security Council in early May.

April 29, 2006 (Stop Fundamentalism) – An Iranian television program aired an interview with Mohsen Rezai, secretary of the State Exigency Council.  This interview reveals some of the behind the scene discussions in between the high rank officials of Iran.

“The nuclear, human rights and long-range missile issues are all pretexts to prevent Iran’s progress.” Rezaie said. 

“But we are breaking the blockade. Our influence in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf region shows that we are transforming from a national government to a regional power” Rezai bragged about Tehran’s active involvement in Iraq, Lebanon and other countries.  “A giant is slowly growing up in Iran, gaining dominance in its surrounding area. If it is empowered economically and technologically parallel to the political issues, after 20 or 30 years, when the west lifts its head, it will see that a small but regional empire has taken shape” he continued.

Referring to the transfer of Iran’s nuclear file to the UN Security Council by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) he concluded, “Therefore, the nuclear issue is a pretext to prevent Iran’s progress.”

In March, the United Nations Security Council gave Iran one month ending April 28 to suspend all its uranium enrichment activities. It also called on ElBaradei to prepare a report verifying whether or not Tehran had complied.

Earlier this month, Iran said that it had successful enriched uranium to 3.5 percent, a clear slap at UN Security Councils Statement.  On Friday hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Iran “does not give a damn” about resolutions by the Security Council calling on it to suspend its sensitive nuclear activities.

About possible confrontation with the United States, Rezai advised, “We know the weak spot of America. Bit giants have vulnerable spots. If we act with prudence, valor and especially martyrdom (referring to suicide operations) we can take advantage of these weaknesses.”

“We hope nothing of this sort will happen, neither sanctions nor war, but if it does, I think there are very powerful, strong and sacrificing potentials in Iran that will sacrifice themselves for Islam and the nation and help pass the country through this challenge.” Rezai suggested as Iran’s a solution.
