High Rep. Catherine Ashton Will Ask EU 27 to Accept Ashraf Residents

Stop Fundamentalism – High Representative Catherine Ashton is going to ask the 27 member countries of the European Union to take in those residents of Camp Ashraf who have links to them, said an anonymous official to AP Thursday.

This will make a big portion of the total number of residents in the camp.  However the actual number has not been disclosed yet.

Iran intends to close Camp Ashraf by the end of the year and move the 3400 camp residents elsewhere in Iraq.  That is something the residents will not agree with.  The residents say that Iraqi intentions for moving them inside Iraq while they plan to leave the country is suspicious and they fear the Nour al-Maliki is planning another massacre of the camp residents to please the Iranian regime.

Iraqi forces attacked Camp Ashraf last April killing 36 residents and wounding hundreds.  An international surge of condemnations and outcry followed the attack.

The residents of the camp are members of the Iranian principle opposition movement, the Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK.
