Heavy Police Presence in Iranian Cities Following Ban of Top Candidates

Stop Fundamentalism – Iranian news sources report of heavy police presence throughout Tehran and other major cities such as Isfahan and Tabriz, following release of the names of qualified presidential candidates by the Iranian Interior Ministry, today.

There are speculations that the disqualification of former president Hashemi Rafsanjani and also Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, who is favored by the current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, could lead to massive street demonstrations similar to what transpired during 2009.

Iranian state-run television announced the names of qualified candidates at about 10PM local time.

Some Iranian media reported earlier Tuesday that Rafsanjani may be disqualified due to his age.

At the same time opposition sources reported that some of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad allies were arrested today by Iranian security forces.
