Abuse 'widespread' in Iraqi prisonsBAGHDAD AND CAIRO – After a US raid on a secret Iraqi government jail last month revealed some detainees were tortured and abused there, Interior Minister Bayan Jabr insisted abuse claims were exaggerated and that torture will not be tolerated in the new Iraq.

US soldiers and some Iraqi officials disagree. They say not only is prisoner abuse widespread, but that much of it is carried out by Mr. Jabr's subordinates. Efforts to bring the problem under control during the past year have largely been frustrated by indifference from senior Iraqi officials, they say.

Rostam Tajik, 20 years old, will be hanged in public in the central Iranian city of Isfahan, the hard-line daily Kayhan wrote.

Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad says that when he delivered his speech at the UN General Assembly in September, he felt there was a light around him and that the attention of the world leaders in the audience was unblinkingly focused upon him. The claim has caused a stir in Iran, as a transcript and video recording of Ahmadinejad's comments have been published on an Iranian website, baztab.com. There are also reports that a CD showing Ahmadinejad making the comments also has been widely distributed in Iran. Is the Iranian president claiming to be divinely inspired?

Two youths street-paraded in Iran capitalTehran, Iran, Dec. 01 – Two youths were street-paraded in Tehran by the State Security Forces, a state-run daily reported on Thursday.

The two unnamed youths had been arrested after armed clashes with police in the capital, according to the daily Iran.

They were paraded in Tehran’s Sattar-Khan region.

EU registers concerns about rights violations in Iran

The British Embassy in Tehran, in its role as the European Union (EU) Presidency, in a statement said that the Islamic Republic had violated “rights of freedom of expression and freedom of association”.

Iran’s political prisoners plan hunger strike

ImageTehran, Iran, Nov. 22 – Political prisoners in Tehran’s Evin Prison have announced that they will start a hunger strike from Tuesday evening after prison guards attacked prisoners in one of the wards and confiscated their personal property, Iran Focus has learnt.

Guards acting on the orders of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) beat up political prisoners in Ward 350 of Evin Prison. They confiscated personal property including books and prisoners’ handwritten material, according to the relative of a political prisoner in Evin, who spoke to Iran Focus on condition of anonymity
