Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Jabr, overseer of two detention centers raided by U.S. troops in the past two months, has been relieved of his duties, according to a former Iraqi special forces commander at the ministry.

The interior minister is being investigated in connection with abuse of prisoners, torture and killings carried out by his officers, Gen. Muntazar Jasim al-Samarrai, the former special forces chief, told The Washington Times in a telephone interview from Amman, Jordan.

BAGHDAD – Thousands of Sunni Arabs demonstrated after on Friday prayers in and around the Iraqi capital, calling for the cancellation of the results of the December 15 elections and a holding new contests.

The demonstrations were called by the National Concord Front, the main Sunni electoral alliance made up of three major parties, and took place in the Yarmouk neighborhood in western Baghdad and the town of Sammara just north of the capital, AFP correspondents said.

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Since results from Iraq’s national assembly election trickled out this week showing that Shiite Muslims _many backed by neighboring Iran – would dominate the new parliament, Sunni Muslims have begun to ask: Is Israel really Iraq’s enemy, or is it neighboring Iran?

Sunnis are often not comfortable talking openly about Israel, especially in a region where most Arabs won’t refer to it by name and blame Israel for the conflict with the Palestinians. But privately many said Israel has not done anything lately to harm them; Iran has.

On Tuesday at the same time when talks between the EU-3 (Britain, France and Germany) and Iran was taking place in Switzerland regarding Iran’s nuclear program, hundreds of Iranian exiles and Belgians braved the winter’s cold and rallied outside the European Union headquarters in Brussels to call for the immediate referral of Tehran’s atomic weapons file to the UN Security Council.
