On Saturday, April 22, 2023, Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, a political prisoner in the Evin prison’s women’s ward, sent a message to world governments.

She urged these governments in her message to sever diplomatic ties with the Iranian regime, close embassies, and refrain from supporting perpetrators of violence against the Iranian people.

She also called for an end to support for those perpetrating violence against the Iranian people. Ms. Iraee was sentenced to six years in prison for “assembly and collusion” and an additional year for “propaganda against the state” by Tehran’s 26th branch of the Revolutionary Court on April 13, 2023.

The international community's silence on the issue has empowered the regime to continue its oppressive rule, according to Ms. Iraee.

Ms. Iraee’s message was focused on the Iranian regime’s oppressive tactics and its increased power due to international recognition and support. She spoke about the normalization of death in Iran and how the regime has been responsible for the death of many people with differing political and ideological views.

She also criticized the regime’s cover-up of its crimes, stating that this allowed the Islamic Republic to gain international credibility. Many people in Iran have been subjected to brutal punishment, such as executions, stonings, amputations, and gouging of eyes, for offenses such as theft, drug use, and murder.

Ms. Iraee emphasized that the international community must do more than merely issue statements and condemn the regime, calling for concrete actions such as closing Iranian embassies and recalling ambassadors.

Many people have been subjected to detention, torture, and disappearances, and the regime has been accused of human rights abuses. The international community has previously imposed sanctions on the regime and labeled its leaders as terrorists, but Ms. Iraee’s call for the cutting of diplomatic ties takes things a step further.

It remains to be seen if Ms. Iraee’s message will have any impact on the international community’s relationship with Iran.

However, her words highlight the ongoing human rights abuses in the country and the need for world governments to take action to prevent further oppression. The situation in Iran is a reminder of the importance of protecting human rights and the role that the international community can play in achieving this goal.
