In Iran the truckers’ strike has entered its 11th day. Footage and images circulated on social media on June 1st, displayed cab drivers, who have also joined the strike in several cities across Iran. It also showed striking truckers and taxi drivers resisting security forces. In Isfahan, strikebreakers were reportedly sent from other towns to help authorities end the protests.

Iranian truckers have gone on strike in seven of Iran’s provinces. The government appears to be alarmed and is trying to persuade the drivers to return to work.

On Wednesday, state-run news agency Tasnim quoted transport official Dariush Amani of Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization, as saying it is “reasonable” for truck drivers to demand greater fees for transporting cargo to compensate for their rising costs. He added that the cargo fees paid to the drivers should be increased by 15 to 20 percent.

On Wednesday, in the southern Iranian city of Kazerun, according to a Fox News report a protest turned deadly. Security forces allegedly opened fire on a protest against a plan to divide the city into two sections. At least two protesters are said to have been killed, and several injured. As well, many were arrested.
