Senior IRGC commander behind Khobar Towers bombing

Nearly 20 years after the attack on Khobar Towers near Dhahran in Saudi Arabia, the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat claimed that Ahmed al-Mughassil had been apprehended for playing a key role in the terrorist attack according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)

The terrorist attack, a truck bombing, killed 19 U.S. servicemen and injured hundreds of people of many nationalities.

In 1997, the NCRI revealed in a press conference that the terrorist attack was organized and ordered by the Iranian regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF).

The NCRI had compiled evidence from sources of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) that proved that the Khobar Towers bombing was planned by the Iranian regime’s Intelligence Ministry (MOIS) and the IRGC.

Information from the NCRI indicated that the Qods Force’s 6th Corps, which has carried out other terrorist activities in the Persian Gulf, carried out the attack which was overseen by IRGC General Ahmad Sharifi, the commander of the 6th Corps.

The Iranian regime’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) was where decisions were made, and meetings were chaired by Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani – the regime’s president at that time.

The current president of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, was also involved. He acted as secretary to the SNSC and as a representative of the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The FBI went on to confirm the regime’s involvement. In 2006, Louis Freeh, who oversaw the investigation, stated that the IRGC trained and paid the bombers.
