Crowed of well over two thousand Iranian dissidents gathered in Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris on Monday 18 October to bid farewell to the Iranian Legendary Singer and resistance icon Marzieh.

MarziehMarzieh, diva of Persian music and a symbol of Iranian women’s resistance against the Mullahs’ theocratic rule passed away on Wednesday 13 October in Paris, at the age of 86.

Marzieh, was known to all Iranians for her music of love, culture and pride.  She spoke to her listeners through her music.  Her songs bring back memories and give hope to all Iranians.

Marzieh sang for 60 years.  She started as a young 19-year-old girl in an era in Iran when singing for a young woman was not easy.  But the beauty of her voice cut through and won her the highest popular recognition an Iranian signer has ever enjoyed.  In fact she was the first woman whose songs were broadcast on Iranian radio 60 years ago.

What separates Marzieh from other artists beside her music is her stance against the dictatorial rule in Iran.  She was an Icon of resisting Iranian Women against the oppression of the Islamic regime.  She was forced into silence after the 1979 Islamic Revolution but in 1994 she fled the country to join the main Iranian opposition movement, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). In her last 16 years she was an outspoken political voice for freedom and against the mullahs’ oppressive regime.  She performed many concerts in exile during these years to advance the cause of freedom in Iran.

Marzieh always said that she dreamed of singing in Azadi Square in Tehran after the fall of the Mullahs’ regime. Her legend  will live through her voice and her call for freedom in Iran.  She will be remembered by all Iranians soon, at the dawn of freedom.
