In a recent conference held at the UK's Parliament on September 12, Baroness Redfern expressed her fervent support for the Iranian people's uprising on its landmark first anniversary.

Reflecting on her personal experiences, she underscored the audacity of those pushing the boundaries for liberty in Iran. Throughout her poignant address, the Baroness emphasized the significance of the struggle for freedom. She shared, “As I was getting ready this morning to come to the conference, I had a knock at the door and it just made me reflect on what it must be like for those women and girls who are fighting for their freedom, what it must be like to get a knock on the door.”

Drawing a stark contrast to her life in a democratic society, she stated, “We live in a free country, I could open my door and speak to whoever it was, not have something that somebody can just come and take and take away me for interrogation.” Baroness Redfern drove home the sentiment that everyone has the right to voice their beliefs and be surrounded by supportive allies throughout their journey.

She also recalled her participation in the Paris conference in 2018, which saw an attempted bomb plot. Baroness Redfern remarked on the resilience of the Iranian freedom movement: “I was at the Paris conference in 2018 where we had a foiled bomb plot… can I say in 2023 their voices are even louder and clearer for a free Iran.”

A notable aspect of her address was her commendation of Mrs. Maryam Rajavi’s unyielding dedication to Iranian freedom. “To Maryam Rajavi, can I just say I had the pleasure of meeting with her and her commitment and courage for freedom in Iran and for freedom of speech,” Baroness Redfern articulated. Furthermore, she spotlighted the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) Ten-Point Plan, describing it as a “respectable and reliable alternative” that champions a democratic Iran, inclusive of women and minority rights.

On the international front, Baroness Redfern urged Western governments to take concrete steps by proscribing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). She labeled the IRGC as “Tehran’s main arm for suppressing dissidents at home and exporting terrorism around the world.”

In concluding her stirring speech, Baroness Redfern left the audience with a hopeful note for the future, “The truth must be told and Iran will be free. Thank you.”
