In a fervent gathering at the Headquarters of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) on March 1, Struan Stevenson, a respected former Member of the European Parliament and once President of the EP Delegation for Relations with Iraq (2009-2014), delivered an impassioned discourse that put a spotlight on the Iranian regime’s oppressive tactics and its alleged backing of terrorism.

Stevenson’s critique came against the backdrop of what he described as a “sham trial” aimed at prosecuting leaders of the Iranian Resistance, which he argues is a testament to Tehran’s growing apprehension towards the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK), a principal component of the NCRI. The MEK’s increasing support, both internationally and domestically, according to Stevenson, has pushed the Iranian regime towards adopting extreme measures such as assassinations, bombings, and cyber-attacks against opposition rallies and offices.

The former MEP’s speech laid bare the regime’s purported engagement in proxy wars, human rights abuses, and violent activities that have destabilized the region. Stevenson urged the international community to recognize the Iranian people’s right to resist and overthrow what he terms a gangster regime. He called for immediate actions, including designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization and closing down Iranian embassies alleged to facilitate terrorist activities.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Stevenson referenced historical and recent acts of violence and suppression, pointing to the regime’s extensive involvement in conflicts across the Middle East and beyond. The IRGC’s support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, along with its provision of military drones to Russia, underscores Iran’s destabilizing role on the global stage.

Stevenson pointed to the regime’s brutal domestic policies, including harsh punishments and a crackdown on dissent, as evidence of its disregard for human rights. The economic turmoil and widespread poverty have fueled nationwide protests demanding democratic reforms, which have been met with severe repression.

The speech also touched upon the regime’s fear of the MEK, recognizing it as a significant threat to its power due to its organizing capability and support within Iran and internationally. Stevenson condemned the regime’s attempts to undermine the opposition through a trial in absentia of MEK members, framing it as a desperate bid to justify further oppression and terrorism.

As the Iranian regime faces increasing isolation and domestic unrest, Stevenson’s call for global unity and decisive action to support democratic forces in Iran resonates more than ever. His message underscores the urgency of addressing Iran’s human rights violations and terrorism sponsorship to ensure regional security and global peace.
