MP Martyn Day, the SNP Spokesperson for Health in the UK House of Commons, voiced his unequivocal support for the Iranian people's uprising during its first anniversary, addressing a significant audience at a conference in the UK Parliament on September 12.

Drawing attention to the oppressive demeanor of the Iranian regime, both within its borders and on the global stage, Day underscored the urgent necessity for regime change. “As a democratic politician, I’m always very wary of calling for regime change in other nations… but I can make an exception with regards to Iran for several obvious reasons,” he noted in his impassioned speech. He condemned “the totally oppressive undemocratic nature” of Iran’s dealings with its citizens and its “inhumane and undemocratic” actions in the international arena, decrying its challenges to global democracy.

Day, aligning with other international voices, stressed the imperative to formally outlaw the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), introduce sanctions against affiliates, and amplify support to Iranian civilians. He stated, “We need to proscribe the IRGC as many others have called for, and we need to be bringing in sanctions against those connected with it, and we need to act to support the people on the ground.”

The Member of Parliament praised the significant role of young individuals and women in spearheading the quest for a more inclusive, secular Iranian democracy. He remarked on their ongoing efforts, saying, “it’s very inspirational to see so many young people and women leading that struggle because it shows you that it’s not replacing one gang of dictators with another.”

Day expressed optimism for the future, wishing success to those championing change in Iran. He optimistically added, “It’s replacing a gang of dictators with an open, secular democracy that is welcoming for all.” The MP also affirmed his unwavering support to the cause, concluding with the words, “if I can be of help, count on my support.”

This notable statement from a prominent UK politician signals a growing international concern regarding Iran’s governance, as well as mounting support for the grassroots movements striving for democratic reform in the country.
