London, February 1, 2024 - In a significant development, the UK House of Commons has voiced strong opposition to the Iranian regime's aggressive stance towards the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) residing in Albania.

With the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, David Rutley, in attendance, the resolution passed underscores a collective European effort to counter Iran’s unlawful activities and uphold the rights of PMOI members under international conventions.

The resolution explicitly denounces the Iranian regime’s reliance on terrorism, espionage, and cyber-attacks aimed at stifling democratic opposition, particularly targeting the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). It highlighted the regime’s attempts to undermine the NCRI’s pursuit of a democratic republic free from religious governance since 2018.

Addressing the threat posed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) within the UK, the resolution calls for its designation as a terrorist organization. It emphasizes the need for swift international collaboration to impose sanctions and hold Iran accountable for its domestic and international violations.

During the parliamentary debate, MP Bob Blackman criticized the IRGC’s pervasive influence in Iran and its role in global conflicts. “The IRGC literally runs and rules Iran, disregarding democracy, freedom of expression, and basic human rights,” Blackman stated, highlighting the IRGC’s support for various militant groups and its contributions to international instability.

MP Holly Lynch and MP Jim Shannon echoed concerns over Iran-backed threats and attacks, underscoring the need for stringent measures against the IRGC. Lynch pointed out the disruption of several kidnapping and assassination attempts in the UK by Iranian operatives, arguing for the IRGC’s proscription to empower UK security services.

MP Martyn Day praised the resilience of the Iranian opposition, specifically the MEK, in their struggle for a democratic and secular Iran. He condemned Iran’s role as a state sponsor of terrorism and its support for conflicts across the Middle East.

The resolution also received backing from MP Wayne David, who criticized Iran’s aggressive foreign policies and its support for terrorism. David Rutley, representing the government, reiterated the UK’s commitment to challenging Iran’s destabilizing actions and human rights abuses.

This parliamentary resolution marks a critical stance by the UK against the Iranian regime’s oppressive policies and its destabilizing activities in the region, advocating for a unified international response to promote freedom and democracy in Iran.
