His death in a helicopter crash earlier this week has been met with both relief and celebration by many Iranians, especially the PMOI Resistance Units. The Resistance Units, a network of activists within Iran, have been expanding their activities across every city and corner of the country.
In response to Raisi’s death, they have organized a series of celebrations and activities to commemorate the event. These activities include gatherings, where participants have been seen holding banners and chanting slogans such as “We pray that Khamenei will soon meet the same fate as Raisi” and “We hope the executioner meets his end in hell.”
In dozens of cities, the Resistance Units held placards that had slogans such as “To the regime of massacres, this is the result of executions,” “Bloody murderers, you don’t belong to Iran,” “Today, the murderer of 1988 is facing justice,” and “Today, the murderer is dead, the entire regime is invalid.” After years of murder and human rights abuses, the people are happy that justice has finally caught up with the regime’s leaders.
The Resistance Units also reiterated their commitment to overthrow the regime with messages such as “The uprising of the people will accelerate” and “Justice-seeking will continue until the regime’s overthrow,” stressing that real justice will only be served when the regime is overthrown.
The celebrations have been a clear expression of the deep anger and resentment towards the current regime, with many expressing their hope for a brighter future without the oppressive rule of figures like Raisi.
Raisi’s role in the execution and murder of thousands of protesters and dissidents cannot be understated. He was a member of the four-person death committee that issued death sentences to thousands of political prisoners in the massacre that took place in 1988, resulting in the deaths of 30,000 political prisoners, most of them members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI).
Before becoming the regime’s president, Raisi continued to hold key positions in the judiciary and became the head of the judiciary in 2019. He played a key role in the killing of more than 1,500 protesters in the 2019 uprising and the killing of at least 750 youths in the 2022 uprising.
The death of Ebrahim Raisi has been seen as a significant event by the Resistance Units and the Iranian people, who view it as a moment of justice for the families whose loved ones were killed by the regime. The celebrations and activities organized by the Resistance Units serve as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Iranian people in their fight for freedom and justice.
