In a rare and revealing statement, Iran’s Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei admitted that approximately 90,000 Iranians including students, schoolchildren, teachers, and ordinary citizens—were prosecuted following the 2022 nationwide protests. Speaking to state media, Ejei acknowledged, “In 2022, around 90,000 cases were filed.

these included students, schoolchildren, teachers, men, women, and individuals from all walks of life.” He also issued a warning that anyone who has been summoned, convicted, or imprisoned could be “exploited by the enemy,” signaling the regime’s deep-rooted paranoia.

According to the state-run Tasnim News, Ejei claimed that the judiciary collaborated with religious seminaries, Basij militias, universities, and educators to facilitate pardons. “Through dialogue with the accused, opportunities were created to request pardons,” he said. However, the admission exposes more than just an attempt at clemency—it reveals a massive state crackdown on civil dissent, with thousands of youths and educators swept up in one of the regime’s broadest suppression efforts in recent history.

While Ejei stated that most detainees were pardoned and would not carry criminal records, he stressed that a small number were excluded—those accused of “dangerous or organizational acts.” These individuals, according to analysts, are likely seen by the regime as politically active and sympathetic to opposition movements such as the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

Ejei’s remarks paint a troubling picture: a regime increasingly threatened by its own youth and willing to criminalize dissent on a massive scale. His confession confirms what many human rights organizations have long warned—the Iranian government is systematically targeting a generation it fears could lead the push for democratic change.
