In a recent episode of the “Iran: The Untold Story” podcast, Ambassador Lincoln Bloomfield Jr., former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs, shared his discoveries about the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK), the main opposition movement against the Iranian regime.

Bloomfield’s transition from skepticism to advocacy sheds light on the complex narrative surrounding the MEK. Bloomfield recounted his initial reluctance to support the MEK when approached by Iranian Americans to help remove the group from the U.S. terrorist list. His interest was piqued by the consistent negative portrayal of the MEK, which was labeled as a cult, Marxist, terrorist, and collaborator with Saddam Hussein.

These descriptions also included allegations of the MEK’s involvement in the 1979 U.S. embassy hostage crisis and the Iran-Iraq war. The turning point came in 2011 when Bloomfield visited Paris for the 30th anniversary of a significant protest led by MEK founder Massoud Rajavi against Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini’s regime in 1981.

The protest resulted in a brutal crackdown, with thousands of MEK supporters arrested and executed. Motivated by this event, Bloomfield began a thorough investigation into the MEK’s history, uncovering documents and testimonies that challenged the prevailing negative narratives.

Bloomfield’s comprehensive report, which refuted ten major allegations against the MEK, was instrumental in urging then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to reevaluate the group’s terrorist designation. His evidence-based findings led to the MEK’s removal from the list in 2012, as Clinton found insufficient evidence to maintain the terrorist label.

In 2013, Bloomfield published a book detailing the inconsistencies and misrepresentations in terrorism reports concerning the MEK. He highlighted a significant propaganda campaign by the Iranian regime aimed at discrediting the MEK to safeguard its stability. Bloomfield’s work underscores the importance of scrutinizing dominant narratives and the impact of political propaganda on international perceptions.
