In a landmark display of global solidarity, 80 Nobel Laureates have issued a powerful joint letter to world leaders, urging immediate action to support the Iranian people's fight for democracy.

Addressed to prominent figures including U.S. President Joe Biden, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President of the European Council Charles Michel, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the letter calls for a unified international stance against the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses and regional destabilization efforts.

The letter also sent to leaders of the 27 EU member states, highlights the Iranian government’s brutal suppression of its citizens, particularly ethnic and religious minorities. The Nobel Laureates emphasize Iran’s alarming status as the world’s leading per capita executioner, with at least 864 executions in 2023 alone. They remind global leaders of the 2022 uprising, where Iranians vehemently rejected both monarchical and theocratic dictatorships, advocating instead for a democratic republic.

“The Iranian regime’s ruthless suppression of its people is a dire human rights crisis,” the letter states. “The world must not turn a blind eye to the Iranian people’s calls for freedom and democracy.”

The Laureates also criticize Iran’s role in regional instability, particularly through its proxy forces, and highlight the regime’s efforts to divert attention from internal dissent by exporting terrorism. Since the attacks on October 7, 2023, the Iranian regime has been accused of intensifying its efforts to destabilize the Middle East.

The letter received significant support from hundreds of distinguished U.S. professors, who have also written to President Biden. They stress the necessity of recognizing the Iranian people’s right to self-defense against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and to establish a secular, democratic republic. This sentiment is echoed by American Nobel Laureates, Templeton Laureates, and members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Joining a growing international chorus, the Nobel Laureates support Mrs. Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan for Iran’s future, which advocates universal voting rights, free elections, a market economy, separation of religion and state, and gender, religious, and ethnic equality. The plan also calls for a peaceful foreign policy and a non-nuclear Iran.

“The Iranian people, especially the youth, have an inherent right to strive for democracy and freedom,” the letter asserts. “This fundamental entitlement must be unequivocally acknowledged by the international community.”

The Laureates’ plea comes amid a bipartisan effort in the U.S. House of Representatives, where House Resolution 1148, co-sponsored by 145 Representatives, condemns the Iranian regime’s acts of terrorism and internal repression. The resolution also supports the Iranian Resistance and Mrs. Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan.

“We strongly condemn the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses and its destructive role in the Middle East,” the Nobel Laureates conclude. “We urge the global community to blacklist the IRGC as a terrorist entity and stand firmly with the Iranian people in their quest for democracy and freedom.”

This historic call to action underscores the urgent need for a cohesive and resolute international response to support the Iranian people’s aspirations for a democratic and just society.
