In late June 2024, the Iranian dissident network Simaye Azadi hosted a significant panel discussion on the current dynamics between the U.S. and Iran.

The panel featured notable figures such as Judge Michael Mukasey, former U.S. Attorney General; Linda Chavez, former White House Director of Public Liaison; and Kenneth Blackwell, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

The discussion began with a critique of Iran’s election process, particularly after the death of President Ebrahim Raisi. Judge Mukasey highlighted the restrictive candidate selection by the Guardian Council, while Linda Chavez focused on excluding women and the questionable backgrounds of the remaining candidates. Ambassador Blackwell attributed low voter turnout in recent elections to widespread public disillusionment with the unrepresentative electoral system, and he pointed out the candidates’ troubling connections to the IRGC and past atrocities.

The panelists also addressed U.S. policy toward Iran, advocating for consistent pressure on the regime to support the Iranian people’s push for freedom. Judge Mukasey and Linda Chavez underscored the importance of not undermining Iranian opposition groups such as the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK), suggesting a stance of non-interference over direct support.

The panel further discussed Tehran’s persistent efforts to discredit the MEK and NCRI. Linda Chavez explained that the regime’s strategy to vilify these opposition groups was bolstered when the MEK was listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S., which facilitated the regime’s attempts to delegitimize them. Judge Mukasey noted that this demonization is part of a broader effort to control the narrative and weaken the opposition’s influence. Ambassador Blackwell highlighted the increasing support for dissent both within and outside Iran, which challenges the regime’s false narratives and showcases the resilience of the Iranian Resistance.

Ambassador Blackwell criticized the international community, particularly the UN, for its insufficient response to Iran’s human rights violations, calling for a firmer stance against the regime’s oppressive actions. The discussion also covered the broader implications of U.S. involvement in global issues and the importance of maintaining a vigilant and consistent policy toward Iran.

The panel concluded on a note of cautious optimism, with Chavez, Blackwell, and Judge Mukasey expressing confidence in the Iranian people’s resilience and the potential for democratic change shortly.
