On September 10, 2024, a significant conference titled “Human Rights in Iran and Securing Accountability: A Call for Justice” took place in the UK Parliament, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight for justice and human rights in Iran.

The event, which brought together members of both Houses of Parliament from various political parties, as well as representatives of the Iranian diaspora, underscored the global concern over escalating human rights abuses in the country. Prominent Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi delivered a speech via video conference, calling for accountability for the clerical regime’s crimes.

The conference coincided with the anniversary of the September 2022 nationwide uprising in Iran, which marked a turning point in the country’s struggle for freedom. The speakers at the event emphasized their solidarity with the Iranian people. They supported Rajavi’s call for concrete international actions to hold the regime accountable for four decades of human rights violations, including crimes against humanity and genocide.

One of the central points of discussion was the landmark report presented by Professor Javaid Rehman, the former UN Special Rapporteur, which outlined decades of atrocities committed by the Iranian regime.
One of the central points of discussion was the landmark report presented by Professor Javaid Rehman, the former UN Special Rapporteur, which outlined decades of atrocities committed by the Iranian regime.

The report specifically focused on the 1988 massacre of political prisoners, in which 90% of those executed were members or supporters of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK). The regime’s ongoing efforts to erase the evidence of these crimes, including the destruction of mass graves, further highlighted its attempt to evade justice.

Rajavi, in her address, called for the application of universal jurisdiction to prosecute those responsible for these atrocities, stressing the importance of accountability as a matter of justice and global peace. She also reiterated the commitment of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) to abolishing the death penalty in a free Iran, noting that execution under the current regime is not just a punishment but a tool of political repression.

Members of the UK Parliament also voiced their support for Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan for Iran’s future. They called for the designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This designation, along with the international community’s recognition of the Iranian people’s struggle, is seen as a crucial step in pressuring the regime and supporting the country’s path toward democracy.

As the conference concluded, the call for justice rang clear: the international community must take practical steps to ensure the Iranian regime’s leaders are held accountable for their crimes, not only for the sake of the Iranian people but for global peace and stability.
