On Tuesday, September 24, thousands of Iranian-Americans and supporters of the Iranian Resistance gathered outside the United Nations headquarters in New York to protest the presence of Iranian regime President Masoud Pezeshkian at the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

The demonstration, covered by major media outlets, was a bold statement against Iran’s oppressive government and its record of human rights abuses. Protestors, holding banners and placards, demanded an end to theocratic rule in Iran, urging global leaders to address the regime’s long-standing violations of human dignity.

The rally coincided with speeches from world leaders such as U.S. President Joe Biden and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, amplifying the voices of those opposing the Iranian government.

Prominent Voices Condemn Iranian Regime

Speeches from notable figures echoed throughout the protest, emphasizing the international call for change. Iranian opposition President-elect Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), questioned why the leader of what she termed “the regime of executions and massacres” was welcomed at the UN. Rajavi called for accountability for Iran’s leaders, urging the global community to hold them responsible for crimes against humanity.

In a pre-recorded message, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz expressed his solidarity with the protesters, criticizing the UN for allowing Iranian leaders a platform despite their brutal history. Cruz called for global action, declaring that it was time for the Iranian regime to be consigned to the “ash heap of history.”

Renowned lawyer and academic Alan Dershowitz compared the regime to Nazi Germany, warning that continued appeasement of Tehran could lead to global peril. “The current regime is the most dangerous since the Nazis,” he stated, calling for a united front to support a transition to secular democracy in Iran.

Ambassador Sam Brownback also addressed the crowd, urging increased diplomatic and economic pressure on the regime. He stressed the need for global action to prevent what he described as a potential “nuclear holocaust in the Middle East” if the current regime remained in power.

Widespread Media Coverage

The protest garnered significant media attention. The New York Times reported on the scale of the demonstration, noting the rally’s alignment with Pezeshkian’s speech at the UN. Fox News and ABC News similarly covered the event, highlighting the passionate demands of protesters for regime change. Images of those executed under the regime were held aloft by many attendees, underscoring the harsh reality of life in Iran under theocratic rule.

A Global Call for Change

The New York rally reinforced the growing international support for the Iranian Resistance and the call for democratic reform in Iran. Protestors urged global leaders to cease their appeasement of the Iranian regime and instead support the Iranian people’s pursuit of freedom. As Rajavi concluded in her address, “The Iranian people and Resistance movement are determined to overthrow this criminal regime and achieve freedom for Iran and its people.”
