Brian Hook, a former senior official in the Trump administration, shared key insights on U.S. policy towards Iran under a potential second Trump term during a CNN interview on November 7.

Hook, who previously served as the State Department’s special envoy for Iran, emphasized that the Iranian regime is the “main source of instability” in the Middle East, a central concern of Trump’s foreign policy.

According to Hook, the Trump administration’s primary goal was to diplomatically isolate Iran and weaken its economy. This, he said, would reduce Iran’s ability to fund militant groups and proxy forces such as Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and militias in Iraq and Syria. “President Trump knows that the main source of instability in the Middle East today is the Iranian regime,” Hook stated, reiterating the administration’s commitment to curtailing Iran’s destabilizing influence.

Importantly, Hook clarified that while Trump opposed Iran’s regional ambitions, the U.S. had no interest in pursuing regime change. “The future of Iran will be decided by the Iranian people,” he said. Instead, the Trump administration’s focus would remain on limiting Tehran’s export of extremism and revolutionary ideology, particularly in the strategically important Gulf region, which Hook described as “one of the world’s most dynamic regions economically and culturally.”

Having played a pivotal role in the “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, Hook’s experience was widely praised by his colleagues, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who described him as a “trusted advisor.” As reports suggest Hook may lead the incoming State Department’s transition team, his influence on U.S. policy toward Iran is likely to remain significant. Despite his role in U.S. efforts to curb Iranian influence, Hook has reportedly been the target of Iranian threats, though Tehran has denied these allegations.
