JERUSALEM, June 28, 2006 (AFP) – Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired four rockets into southern Israel on Wednesday after Israeli troops and tanks rolled into the territory in a bid to release a kidnapped soldier.
The notoriously inaccurate rockets were fired from northern Gaza and fell on open fields near the kibbutz of Karmiya, just hours after Israeli ground troops moved in to the south of Gaza.
According to the Israeli army, more than 150 such makeshift rockets have been fired towards Israel since an upsurge in cross-border violence following the deaths of eight Palestinians at a beach picnic on June 9.
Dubbed "Summer Rain" by the army, Wednesday’s limited operation was the first major ground offensive against Gaza since Israel pulled settlers and troops in September last year following a 38-year occupation.
