“Pirates” Rakes In $258.2 Million, Leads Box Office

Los Angeles, CA, July 17 (AHN) – Record-breaking blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" has grossed $258.2 million in its second weekend at the box office. Studio figures show the movie, which stars Johnny Depp return as Captain Jack Sparrow, has become the most popular film of the year so far in North America.

Chuck Viane, Disney’s head of distribution, is quoted on the BBC saying, "It’s really fun when you’re riding a comet like this."

The blockbuster beat this year’s biggest earner, X-Men: The Last Stand. The movie, which also stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, has raked up to $125m in foreign sales revenue. Second on the box office ranking was "Little Man." The film, which is based on the story of a tiny thief masquerading as a baby, raked $21.7 million.

Universal’s "You, Me and Dupree" comedy came third. The movie, which stars Wilson as a house guest opened with $21.3 million. Meanwhile "Superman Returns" was ranked fourth with $11.6 million. "The Devil Wears Prada" closed the first five rankings with $10.5 million.
