Fatemeh Ziaii, a 67-year-old political prisoner and advocate for the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), faced a distressing setback on Sunday, April 21.

Despite her critical health condition and ongoing medical treatment, she was abruptly returned to Evin Prison. Ziaii had been granted temporary release due to the severity of her illness, which includes advanced Multiple Sclerosis (MS), placing her health in grave jeopardy.

A veteran of Iran’s political turmoil, Ziaii has endured repeated arrests and spent over a decade in the regime’s prisons and torture chambers. Her daughters’ involvement with the PMOI adds complexity to her plight. Denied adequate medical care and access to medication while incarcerated, her situation is dire.

Ziaii’s most recent incarceration began in September 2022, following a six-and-a-half-year sentence for alleged involvement with the PMOI. Despite temporary release for medical treatment, her return to prison underscores the regime’s callous disregard for her health.

Human rights advocates, including the Iranian Resistance, urgently appeal to international bodies such as the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran’s human rights. They demand the immediate release of Ziaii and other gravely ill prisoners facing mortal peril behind bars.
