Russia to launch 24-hour news channel

Dobrodeyev denied a suggestion by Kommersant that the new channel would be unobjective in its coverage of the government, likewise asserting that the All Russian Televison and Radio Company’s flagship Rossiya channel gives all sides fair treatment in its hourly news bulletins.

"I assure you that throughout the day we give the whole world news picture fully and accurately," he said.

Asked if Russians wanted to see blanket coverage of politics, Dobrodeyev said: "You should not underestimate the involvement of our compatriots in politics."

He said the channel would also concentrate on reports from the vast country’s regions "from Vladivostok to Saint Petersburg."

The All Russian Televison and Radio Company already includes the general channel Rossiya, Kultura and Sport.

Russia has another 24-hour channel, Russia Today, which broadcasts in English and is aimed at foreign audiences with a self-described mission to show Russia from a Russian point of view.
