Wall St. slumps amid Dell profit warning; Dow shed 0.55 percent

NEW YORK, July 21, 2006 (AFP) – Wall Street shares ended lower Friday, weighed down by a profit warning from computer giant Dell and amid ongoing concerns on violence in the Middle East.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 59.88 points (0.55 percent) at 10,868.22 while the technology-stacked Nasdaq index fell 19.05 points (0.93 percent) to 2,020.37.

The broad-market Standard and Poor’s 500 index ended 8.80 points lower (0.70 percent) at a preliminary close of 1,240.33.

Traders said Dell’s announcement had affected sentiment, particularly in the technology sector despite better-than-expected earnings reports earlier this week from Microsoft Corp and Google.
