In a striking display of resistance, political prisoners across 24 Iranian prisons have continued their participation in the “Tuesdays Against Executions” campaign, now in its 41st week.

This coordinated action condemns the country’s escalating use of the death penalty, drawing attention to the alarming rate of recent executions and the ongoing plight of prisoners facing potential death sentences.

In a statement this week, political prisoners underscored a stark reality: “In this regime of executions, repression and the death penalty are continuously increasing.” The statement revealed that nearly 56 prisoners have been executed since the start of November, with 23 of those occurring in the past week. Among them was Arvin Ghahremani, a Jewish prisoner, whose execution the prisoners described as “unjust and opaque.”

The campaign has also highlighted the case of eight young detainees from the 2022 protests, known as the Ekbatan case. Held in secret trials, these individuals face severe charges that could lead to execution, a situation sparking fresh fears of further crackdowns. Additionally, the Supreme Court has confirmed the death sentences of four Baluch prisoners—Eido Shahbakhsh, Abdolghani Shahbakhsh, Abdolrahim Ghanbarzehi, and Soleiman Shahbakhsh—whose executions could be carried out at any time. “At any moment, they could be sent to the gallows,” the statement warns.

This campaign, gaining traction both domestically and internationally, sees participants from numerous Iranian prisons, including Tehran’s Evin Prison, Ghezel Hesar, Karaj Central, and prisons in cities like Isfahan, Ahvaz, and Rasht. These prisoners’ collective plea calls on human rights activists worldwide to amplify the voices of those facing death sentences and bring attention to the architects behind Iran’s “execution machine.”

“Today is #checkuptuesday #tuesdayagainstexecutions in Iran,” Zamparutti wrote on Facebook. “This is the 40th Tuesday of the hunger strike since the initiative started. Since the beginning of the year, at least 636 prisoners have been hanged in Iran. I support the opposition movements of the regime… for a change that could happen even in a nonviolent way.”

One prominent supporter of this campaign, former Italian MP and Hands Off Cain co-founder Elisabetta Zamparutti, has championed the Iranian prisoners' hunger strikes.

The “Tuesdays Against Executions” campaign, now symbolizing defiance against systemic injustice, continues to rally global advocates and activists. The statement from Iranian prisoners concludes with a clear message: collective resistance and unyielding global pressure are essential to halt the machinery of executions and hold those responsible to account.
