As Iran's newly appointed president, Masoud Pezeshkian, prepares for his inauguration, he has made it clear that Tehran will continue its longstanding policy of supporting regional proxy groups.

In a series of strategic meetings held on July 29 and 30, Pezeshkian emphasized the regime’s commitment to these alliances, reinforcing Iran’s intent to maintain influence in regional conflicts.

On July 29, Pezeshkian met with Ziad al-Nakhalah, the Secretary-General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). During this meeting, he reaffirmed Tehran’s unwavering support for the PIJ, reiterating the regime’s commitment to what it calls the “oppressed Palestinian people” and the “liberation of Jerusalem.” Despite any potential leadership changes, Pezeshkian’s stance signals continuity in Iran’s foreign policy towards Palestinian groups.

Qassem expressed gratitude for Iran’s continued support, emphasizing Hezbollah’s strong ties to the principles of the Islamic Revolution. Pezeshkian responded by affirming that supporting the “Resistance Front” remains a religious obligation and a key policy for the Islamic Republic, indicating that Tehran’s approach to its proxy relationships will remain unchanged.

In another significant engagement, Pezeshkian held talks with Sheikh Naim Qassem, Deputy Secretary-General of Hezbollah.

On July 30, Pezeshkian met with Mohammed Abdul Salam, the spokesperson for Yemen’s Houthi rebels. He commended the Houthis’ influence on regional affairs and stressed the importance of cooperation among Islamic nations to counter what he described as the “oppression of Muslims.” This meeting further underscores Iran’s intent to bolster its influence in Yemen through the Houthis.

Pezeshkian also engaged with Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous and other top Syrian officials. Their discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations in various sectors, including economic, scientific, and cultural cooperation, highlighting the enduring partnership between Tehran and Damascus. An invitation from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for Pezeshkian to visit Damascus further solidified the importance of this alliance.

These meetings collectively signal Iran’s strategic use of proxy groups to project power across the Middle East, ensuring its regional dominance while sidestepping international scrutiny.
