Most notably, she reflected on the tragic murder of Mahsa Amini and others who were victims of a regime “that has zero respect for human rights.”
“It’s really, really important that we keep the foot on the pedal to make sure that this doesn’t go into the abyss of media silence,” she emphasized. Her sentiments resonated with many, as she has been a staunch advocate for women’s rights for decades.
The Baroness showed her appreciation for a groundbreaking statement that saw over a thousand prominent women from 67 countries stand in solidarity with the Iranian people. “This is the sort of show of support for our brothers and sisters in Iran,” she remarked. Among those who have voiced their support are 50 current and former presidents, 175 parliamentarians, Nobel Prize laureates, and artists.
Central to the discussion was Mrs. Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan which envisions a democratic Iran. Baroness Verma ardently expressed her support, stating, “The Ten-Point Plan is a democratic process that will enable the people of Iran to live free and have respect for their human rights.”
However, she expressed her bewilderment on the reluctance to proscribe the IRGC, saying, “I really, really cannot understand why we are still discussing the proscribing of the IRGC.” The Baroness firmly called upon parliamentarians globally to urge their governments to push harder on this agenda.
A chilling reminder was given regarding the numerous individuals who’ve gone missing during the uprising. “We don’t even have a real number of people who are not available for comment anymore,” she lamented.

With a firm stand against appeasement, the Baroness emphasized, “History will tell you over and over again, that appeasement does not work.”Expressing her commitment, Baroness Verma vowed, “I will sit on this platform as many times as I am asked to until we see that change.” As the General Assembly plans to reconvene later this month, she holds hope that the message for change will be loud and clear, urging her peers that “it starts with action and not just gentle words.”
In conclusion, Baroness Verma’s powerful words served as a call to action for leaders worldwide, emphasizing the importance of advocating for human rights and demanding an end to the ongoing abuses in Iran.
