In a decisive move that underscores its commitment to global security and human rights, Belgium’s newly formed coalition government has condemned the Iranian regime’s oppressive policies and pledged to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The 2025–2029 coalition agreement, finalized after months of negotiations, outlines Belgium’s strategic priorities in both domestic and foreign policy.
The 209-page document, titled Federal Coalition Agreement 2025-2029, highlights Belgium’s foreign policy direction, which includes countering authoritarian threats, reinforcing democratic values, and strengthening Europe’s security framework. Iran’s destabilizing role in the Middle East, its support for proxy groups, and its continued violations of human rights feature prominently in the coalition’s agenda
Belgium Supports EU Terrorist Designation for the IRGC
A significant aspect of Belgium’s new foreign policy approach is its push for the European Union to officially designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This aligns with growing European momentum to blacklist the IRGC due to its involvement in regional conflicts, terrorist financing, and systematic human rights abuses.

“Together with other European nations, we propose that the IRGC be added to the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations and that harsh economic sanctions, as well as other punitive measures, be enforced against it,” states the coalition agreement.
Belgium’s position follows years of Iranian-linked terrorist plots and espionage activities on European soil. Belgian authorities have foiled multiple Iranian-orchestrated operations, reinforcing the government’s decision to adopt a hardline stance against Tehran’s state-sponsored terrorism.
Addressing Human Rights Abuses and Nuclear Ambitions
The coalition agreement explicitly denounces Iran’s repression of its own people, particularly women and pro-democracy activists. It expresses Belgium’s solidarity with the Iranian people and calls for an end to the regime’s violent suppression of dissent.
Furthermore, Belgium reaffirms its commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, emphasizing the necessity of coordinated action with European allies.

“In coordination with our allies, we will prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons,” the document states, highlighting the significant threat Iran’s nuclear ambitions pose to global security.
Belgium’s firm stance aligns with broader European efforts to isolate the Iranian regime diplomatically and economically. By endorsing the IRGC’s terrorist designation and condemning Iran’s human rights abuses, the Belgian government sends a clear message: Tehran will face sustained international pressure unless it changes course. This marks a significant shift in Belgium’s diplomatic strategy, reinforcing its commitment to European security and global stability.
