In a stirring speech at a UK Parliamentary conference on September 12, which marked the first anniversary of Iran’s 2022 uprising, British MP Toby Perkins, the Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs, articulated his unwavering support for the Iranian populace and their aspirations for a democratic Iran.

Perkins recounted his participation in the Free Iran World Summit 2023 in Paris, a significant event that attracted parliamentarians globally, showcasing the universal endorsement for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan. “It was amazing to see so many parliamentarians from right across the world all joining together… all recognizing the desire of the Iranian people to be free,” Perkins stated in his address.

The MP particularly emphasized the nationwide uprising in Iran over the preceding year, lauding the courage of its citizens who defied the dangers posed by the oppressive IRGC and the theocratic regime. “This uprising, the bravery of those people taking to the streets, despite the tremendous danger caused by the oppression of the IRGC and the theocratic regime, has been truly inspirational to all of us,” Perkins recounted.

Drawing attention to the appalling human rights record of the Iranian regime, Perkins disclosed that the state’s repressive response to the uprising led to the death of over 750 protestors, including a tragic loss of at least 60 children. Moreover, he reported that an estimated 35,000 individuals faced detention, undergoing heinous treatments of torture and sexual violence.

Asserting the illegitimacy of the Iranian regime, Perkins declared, “The regime has no legitimacy and no right to run the country of Iran… it is a serial mass murderer… and the UK government must stand up and say that it will not negotiate with this terrorist regime.”

In his closing remarks, MP Perkins expressed hope for Iran’s future, stressing that the aspirations for the nation are not confined to backing Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan alone. He envisioned a country where people possess the freedom to democratically elect their leaders. “And so the future for the people of Iran is… to know that in the future they will be able to choose their own destiny in a free and democratic Iran,” Perkins optimistically asserted.

Perkins concluded by echoing a collective global sentiment, saying, “it is very much the hope of people across the UK Parliament, of people across Europe, across the Western world… that the fight and awe-inspiring dedication of those protesters in Iran will ultimately lead, as soon as possible, to a free Iran… to take its rightful place as a prosperous nation in the Middle East and across the world.”
