This announcement comes despite Pourmohammadi’s controversial past, particularly his involvement in the infamous 1988 massacre of political prisoners in Iran.
The 1988 execution remains a dark chapter in Iran’s history, with Pourmohammadi being one of the principal perpetrators. His role in these executions was confirmed through various sources, including an audio tape released in July 2016 by Ayatollah Montazeri’s son.
In this tape, Pourmohammadi and other members of the notorious “Death Committee” sought Montazeri’s approval for executing the remaining political prisoners, only to be condemned by Montazeri, who predicted that history would remember them as criminals.

Pourmohammadi’s career spans several high-ranking positions within Iran’s political and judicial systems. He has served as an advisor to the head of the judiciary and the general secretary of the Combatant Clergy Association.
However, his controversial past has repeatedly come to the forefront, casting a shadow over his political aspirations. In the winter of 1980, as a young revolutionary prosecutor, Pourmohammadi was sent to Khuzestan province, where he issued death sentences to over 300 prisoners, including teenagers.

By 1987, he had joined the Ministry of Intelligence under Mohammad Rayshahri and later served in various capacities during Ali Fallahian’s presidency. During this period, he also oversaw the assassination of numerous regime opponents abroad, sanctioned by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
Pourmohammadi’s presidential candidacy has reignited debates over his controversial past and the ongoing influence of hardliners in Iran’s political landscape. Despite being disqualified from the Assembly of Experts election in February 2023, Pourmohammadi’s determination to pursue the presidency highlights his enduring influence within the regime. His campaign will likely provoke strong reactions both domestically and internationally, as many continue to call for accountability for his actions during the 1988 massacre.
As the election approaches, the Iranian public and international observers will closely watch how Pourmohammadi’s candidacy unfolds. His controversial past and hardline stance are expected to play a significant role in shaping the political discourse, raising important questions about justice, accountability, and the future direction of Iran’s leadership.
