Daily killing of porters and fuel traders in Iran

The recent explosion in Iran’s Tabas mine, killing over 50 miners, has sparked widespread sorrow and outrage. However, the daily killings of Kurdish porters and Baluch fuel carriers expose a deeper pattern of violence and oppression by the Iranian regime.
The recent explosion in Iran’s Tabas mine, killing over 50 miners, has sparked widespread sorrow and outrage. However, the daily killings of Kurdish porters and Baluch fuel carriers expose a deeper pattern of violence and oppression by the Iranian regime.

These workers, striving to provide for their families, face constant threats from the regime’s security forces. Every day, Kurdish porters and impoverished Baluch fuel carriers are shot and killed while transporting goods across dangerous terrains. On September 20, a porter succumbed to injuries sustained 18 months prior when he was shot by the regime’s forces. His story is not isolated; all four of his brothers had also been injured while working as porters.

The causes of death ranged from direct gunfire by regime forces to stepping on landmines, falling from treacherous mountain paths, or freezing to death. These hazardous routes are often taken to evade armed patrols, whose violent actions push porters toward dangerous alternatives.

Human rights reports indicate that between January and June 2024, at least 270 porters were killed or injured in western border regions.

The regime’s cruelty extends to Baluch fuel carriers, with one of the worst incidents occurring in February 2021. Dozens of protesting fuel carriers were massacred by machine gun fire in Saravan, an event that ignited widespread unrest in Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

Recently, on September 21, another Baluch carrier was killed when security forces shot at a fuel tanker, causing it to overturn and catch fire. Since the start of the Pezeshkian administration, over 40 fuel carriers have been killed through direct gunfire, vehicle fires, or extreme conditions.

Despite the regime’s attempts to appease marginalized communities by placing loyalists in positions of power, the Kurdish, Baluch, and Sunni populations see through these tactics. Together with the Iranian Resistance, they continue their struggle to end the regime’s cycle of corruption, violence, and injustice.
