This appeal comes in the wake of an assassination attempt on Vidal-Quadras in Madrid on November 9, which he narrowly survived, albeit with serious injuries. Vidal-Quadras, while expressing his heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support and solidarity extended to him, did not mince words in his critique of the current EU approach towards Iran.
He emphasized the need for a policy pivot from “ineffective appeasement and negotiation” to one marked by “firmness, perseverance, and strength.” This call to action includes implementing sanctions, exerting diplomatic pressure, internationally isolating Iran, and supporting the Iranian democratic opposition
Vidal-Quadras commended their commitment to “European values of democracy and freedom” and their refusal to be intimidated by the Iranian regime.
“This reflects your unwavering commitment to our European values of democracy and freedom and your personal bravery not letting the criminal Iranian regime intimidate our Institutions,” he stated.
Recounting the harrowing experience of the assassination attempt, Vidal-Quadras revealed, “On November 9th in Madrid, I was shot in the face with the intention to kill me, but miraculously, my life was preserved, although the bullet destroyed my jaw.” Despite the severe trauma, he expressed a determined spirit to return to work, supported by the solidarity of his colleagues. He cautioned against yielding to such blackmail, stating, “If you accept blackmailing once, you will be blackmailed forever.”
Concluding his powerful address, Vidal-Quadras called for a decisive and ethical alignment of EU policy with the aspirations of the Iranian people. “It’s time to live up to our ethical and political standards. It’s time to take the side of the Iranian people with no hesitation. It’s time to win,” he urged, emphasizing the urgent need for the EU to rethink its approach and stand firmly with those seeking democracy and freedom in Iran.
