On November 22, Dr. Franz-Josef Jung, the former German Minister of Defense, delivered a powerful address at a conference held at the European Parliament, where Iranian opposition President-elect Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), was also a speaker. Jung emphasized the urgency of countering Tehran’s disinformation campaign against the NCRI and expressed concern about the susceptibility of European institutions and media to the Iranian regime’s manipulative efforts.

He stated, “The terrorist attack by Hamas on innocent Israeli citizens on October 7…did not happen overnight…The Iranian regime does everything it can to undermine a peaceful resolution.” His comments highlighted the regime’s support for groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, underlining the broader implications for peace and stability in Europe and beyond.

Dr. Jung also pointed out the Iranian regime’s strategy of exporting terrorism and fundamentalism as a sign of its inherent weakness. “The policy of exporting terrorism and fundamentalism by the Iranian regime is a sign of weakness, not strength,” he remarked, drawing attention to the regime’s long history of suppressing opposition, including the execution of thousands of dissenters.

He praised the NCRI for its organized resistance and democratic platform, as embodied in Mrs. Rajavi’s Ten-Point plan, which he views as essential for Iran's future.

The crux of Jung’s address focused on the disinformation campaign against the NCRI. “Furthermore, the Iranian regime has launched an extensive misinformation campaign against the National Council of Resistance of Iran,” he stated, questioning why the regime would target a group supposedly lacking support among the Iranian people.

Dr. Jung’s observations raised alarms over the apparent influence of the Iranian regime on European institutions and media. He called for a decisive shift in the EU’s approach toward Iran, advocating for the rejection of false information and the adoption of a firmer policy, including sanctions. Emphasizing the importance of supporting the Iranian resistance, he concluded, “Mrs. Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan provides an excellent basis for this. Therefore, a democratic Iran is a crucial precondition for peace, security, and stability in the region and the world.”

The speech at the European Parliament marks a significant moment, highlighting the need for a more vigilant and proactive approach in dealing with Iran’s influence and disinformation campaigns, to safeguard democratic values and regional stability.
