Global Parliamentary Groups Rally for IRGC’s Terrorism Designation

On October 23, the British Committee for Iran Freedom (BCfIF) and similar groups from Canada, the Netherlands, and Germany have called on their respective governments to designate the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

This movement underscores a growing international consensus regarding the IRGC’s destabilizing role in the Middle East and beyond. The BCfIF, in their press release, emphasized the urgency of this designation under the UK’s Terrorism Act 2000. Highlighting the IRGC’s involvement in supporting terrorist groups and instigating violence, the committee stated, “The role of the Iranian regime and the IRGC in fomenting violence and conflict in the region is undeniable.”

They also pointed to the IRGC’s actions on British soil, where 15 Iranian-inspired murder and kidnap plots were detected last year alone by the Security Service and Metropolitan Police.

Commending the efforts of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its President-elect, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the BCfIF stressed the importance of recognizing the IRGC's role in domestic oppression and its contribution to regional instability.

They believe that “proscribing the IRGC as a terrorist organization would constitute a significant step towards peace, stability, and justice in the Middle East and beyond.”

Similarly, in Canada, the Canadian Friends of a Free Iran (CFoFI) submitted a letter to government officials, urging the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist entity. This follows a 2018 House of Commons motion advocating the same. They pointed out the IRGC’s involvement in terrorism, including the downing of Flight PS752, and its support for terrorist groups worldwide.

The Dutch Group of Friends of a Free Iran (DGFOFI) in the Netherlands and the German Solidarity Committee for a Free Iran (DSFI) in Germany have also expressed similar concerns. Both groups emphasized the IRGC’s role as a source of conflict and instability, urging their governments and the European Union to take action by designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization and freezing its financial resources.

The DSFI's letter to the German government highlighted the IRGC's role as the Iranian regime's primary tool of oppression and warmongering.

The committee called for support of the EU’s efforts in this designation and for recognition of the NCRI’s resistance efforts against the regime. These coordinated efforts by various international groups represent a united stance against the IRGC’s actions and a call for greater security measures against its influence in the region and across the globe.
