On Saturday, February 10, freedom-loving Iranians around the globe commemorated the anniversary of the 1979 revolution, which saw the end of the shah's dictatorship in Iran.

Demonstrations and exhibitions were held in major cities across Europe and North America, including Berlin, Paris, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Vienna, Rome, Bern, Gothenburg, Luxemburg, Oslo, and Vancouver, showcasing a united front against authoritarian rule.

Iranian opposition President-elect Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), addressed the demonstrators, highlighting the continued struggle for democracy over the past 45 years. “On this sacred occasion, we renew our solemn oath: to achieve victory for the democratic revolution of the Iranian people, no matter the cost,” Rajavi stated, emphasizing the NCRI’s role as a steadfast democratic alternative to both the shah and the current regime.

Rajavi criticized the legitimacy of elections under the current regime, declaring them a facade by Supreme Leader Khamenei and voicing the Iranian people’s demand for the overthrow of the Velayat al-Faqih system. The aspirations for a democratic revolution were echoed throughout the rallies.

In Berlin, notable figures, including former German MP Leo Dautzenberg and former Member of the European Parliament Helmut Geuking, condemned the crimes committed by the regime against the Iranian people and criticized the international community’s appeasement policies. Dautzenberg highlighted the regime’s role in spreading terror both regionally and globally, a sentiment shared by other speakers who called for an end to the policy of appeasement and recognition of the NCRI as a legitimate alternative to the current Iranian regime.

German MP Christoph de Vries urged for the closure of the Islamic Center in Hamburg, a known center of espionage for the regime, and protection for opposition members in Germany from threats and attacks orchestrated by the Iranian government.

The rallies and speeches underscored the unwavering spirit of the Iranian diaspora and supporters worldwide, advocating for an end to the current regime and the establishment of a democratic, secular government in Iran.

The collective chant of "Death to the oppressor, be it the shah or the mullahs" resonated as a powerful message of defiance against dictatorship and a commitment to achieving freedom and democracy for Iran.
