In a remarkable event in Paris, celebrating International Women's Day, Candice Bergen, the former leader of the Canadian Conservative Party, delivered a poignant speech that not only honored the day but also shone a spotlight on the enduring struggle of Iranian women against tyranny.

Bergen’s address underscored the significance of the role played by Iranian women in leading the resistance against Iran’s clerical dictatorship, highlighting their courage, resilience, and determination to fight for freedom, democracy, and equality.

At the heart of Bergen’s speech was the commendation of Iranian opposition President-elect Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), for her unparalleled leadership in mentoring and empowering women to take up key roles in the resistance movement. “Mrs. Rajavi’s leadership is an inspiration to women and men alike,” Bergen remarked, emphasizing the inclusivity and unity in the fight for democratic values.

Bergen vehemently condemned the Iranian regime’s misogynistic practices, human rights violations, and destabilizing activities abroad. She criticized the West’s policy of appeasement towards Tehran, which she argued has only emboldened the regime in its oppression and acts of terror. “It is our duty to stand in solidarity with these courageous women and their demand for regime change,” Bergen asserted, calling for a resolute stance against appeasement and in support of the Iranian people’s fight for freedom.

The former Canadian leader’s address was not just a celebration of the progress made by Iranian women but also a call to action for the international community. She announced a statement supported by 400 women dignitaries from across the globe, including former world leaders, Nobel laureates, UN rapporteurs, and renowned journalists, among others. This coalition condemns the Iranian regime’s repression of women and rejects the policy of appeasement that has emboldened the regime’s oppressive tactics.

“These women have risen up and provided such incredible leadership,” she noted, celebrating the spirit of the women on the ground in Iran, many of whom are young girls risking everything for their freedom.

Bergen's speech painted a vivid picture of the bravery and resilience of Iranian women, who, despite facing immense adversity, continue to lead with love, bravery, and hope.

The event in Paris, ahead of International Women’s Day, served as a powerful reminder of the struggles women face in oppressive regimes and the importance of international solidarity in the fight for gender equality and democracy. Bergen’s call to action and the significant support from international dignitaries underscore the global recognition of the pivotal role of women in leading change and the urgent need to support their fight for freedom and equality in Iran.
