This wave of executions underscores the regime’s relentless pursuit of maintaining its grip on power through brutal means. Under the leadership of Ali Khamenei, executions have been accelerated with unprecedented cruelty, all in the name of preserving the oppressive system of the Velayat-e Faqih. The latest reports indicate that at least 14 prisoners were executed throughout Monday and Tuesday alone.
On Tuesday, April 30, Alireza Sargolzaei was executed in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, along with Mahmoud Mangali (Gorgij), Mehdi Ashtarak, Mohammad Shahbakhsh, and another prisoner in Birjand Prison. Four of the victims were Baluch compatriots. This grim tally adds to the growing list of lives lost to the regime’s merciless policies.
Babak Zanjani, who had been an accomplice of high-ranking regime officials for years, was arrested in 2013 due to internal factional disputes within the regime. In 2015, he was sentenced to death by the same judiciary for charges including “corruption on earth through disruption of the economic system by leading an organized network, extensive fraud from several banks and the Ministry of Oil, forging 24 banking documents, laundering 1,967,500,000 euros, and spreading falsehoods.”
Despite being implicated in extensive fraud and embezzlement, he has now been sentenced to 20 years in prison, highlighting the regime’s selective justice system. The plight of the Iranian people extends beyond the realm of executions. Many face oppression and deprivation, with severe punishments meted out for minor offenses. While individuals languish in prison for petty crimes, the regime continues to turn a blind eye to its atrocities.
The case of Babak Zanjani serves as a stark reminder of the corruption that runs rampant within the regime. Despite his crimes against the nation’s economy, Zanjani’s sentence has been mitigated, raising questions about the integrity of Iran’s judicial system.
As the international community bears witness to the escalating human rights abuses in Iran, it is imperative to stand in solidarity with the Iranian people in their struggle for freedom and justice. The lives lost to senseless executions serve as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for change in Iran.
