In a recent interview with Al Arabiya, Brigadier General Anwar Rajab, spokesperson for the Palestinian security forces, accused Iran of orchestrating unrest in the West Bank, particularly in Jenin.

The remarks underscore escalating tensions in the region, with accusations that Tehran is leveraging instability to further its own agenda.According to Rajab, Iran is playing a “destructive role” by funding and manipulating groups to undermine the Palestinian Authority (PA). “Most of those involved are tied to non-Palestinian agendas that serve regional powers, specifically Iran,” he asserted.

The general claimed that Tehran’s financial and military backing of groups in the West Bank is part of a broader strategy to destabilize the region and weaken the PA’s authority. Rajab linked the unrest in the West Bank to a pattern of Iranian interference across the Middle East, citing the regime’s involvement in conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. “Iran’s so-called ‘Axis of Resistance’ has failed to protect its proxies or its own people.

It cannot possibly protect the Palestinian people or the West Bank,” he said, characterizing Iran’s actions as a desperate bid to project influence amid domestic and regional crises. The Palestinian official also rejected criticisms of the PA’s standing within the West Bank.

He pointed to recent mass rallies in cities like Hebron, Tubas, and Jericho as evidence of public support for the PA’s efforts to restore order. By contrast, extremist groups calling for widespread protests have failed to gain significant traction, he noted.

The situation in Jenin, previously a hotspot of unrest, has reportedly stabilized following security operations by Palestinian forces. “Life has returned to normal in Jenin city, and we are on track to achieve the same stability in the refugee camp,” Rajab stated. He credited the PA’s leadership, under President Mahmoud Abbas, with a clear understanding of the challenges posed by both regional interference and internal discord.

Rajab dismissed claims of government absence in refugee camps as exaggerated, asserting that public support remains strong for efforts to restore order. He emphasized the PA’s commitment to reestablishing security across all areas under its jurisdiction in accordance with international agreements.

As the West Bank grapples with these competing influences, the allegations against Iran add a new layer of complexity to an already volatile situation. Analysts suggest that Tehran’s involvement reflects a strategy to deflect from its own struggles, including economic collapse, social unrest, and power struggles within the regime.

By inciting unrest in the West Bank, Iran appears to be seeking to bolster its narrative of resistance while undermining the PA.This evolving dynamic highlights the precarious balance of power in the region, with implications for both local governance and broader Middle Eastern stability.
