In the city of Mashhad, north-east Iran, the fundamentalist Iranian regime has cut the fingers off a man in his thirties. This is just the “latest in a line of draconian punishments handed down and carried out in recent weeks”, reports the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).
This despicable inhumane punishment was carried out in the Central Prison of Mashhad on Monday. The victim was identified with the initials M. T. by the state-run Khorasan newspaper. They said he is 39 years old. The prisoner is serving a 3-year prison sentence after being accused of theft and the regime’s Court of Appeal upheld the sentence.
Gholamali Sadeqi, the regime’s prosecutor in Mashhad, said that one of the most important policies this year is to confront criminals and hand out sentences “precisely and decisively”.
On Tuesday, Ms. Farideh Karimi, a member of the NCRI and a human rights activist commented on the amputation. She said that the regime has carried out several medieval-style punishments over the past few weeks. Some of these included the flogging of a woman in public on 27th April in Golpayegan, the approval of a sentence to blind a man using acid, the hand amputation, and two public executions on 2nd May in Kermanshah and Nour.
She said: “All of these point to the barbarity of the mullahs’ regime which has unfortunately become more worrisome due to the international community’s inaction. It is now incumbent upon [the UN Special Rapporteur of the human rights situation in Iran] Mr. Ahmed Shaheed to urgently take necessary and effective action to halt the wave of executions and medieval tortures.”
