As the first anniversary of Iran’s nationwide uprising of September 2022 approaches, the ruling regime is escalating its campaign of intimidation and oppression, manifesting in increased executions and the detention of dissidents.

Central to the regime’s crackdown are the supporters of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK), whom officials have labeled as their primary concern. The regime’s efforts are visibly concentrated on political prisoners charged with backing the PMOI.

Ali Moezzi, a 70-year-old political prisoner and PMOI supporter, stands as a recent emblem of this oppression. Arrested in October 2022 and detained without a warrant in Evin prison, Moezzi was thrust before the notorious “judge of executions,” Abolghassem Salavati, on August 6. Presented with a slew of charges, including steadfast support for the PMOI, Moezzi was sentenced to 75 months in prison. In a mocking tone, Salavati remarked, “Congratulations! Go to Ward 209,” referring to the infamous ward where political prisoners are often tortured.

Moezzi, diagnosed with prostate cancer and afflicted by severe knee arthritis, has endured three arrests since the 1980s due to his support for the Iranian opposition. In total, he has spent 12 years behind bars.

This intensified repression coincides with the regime’s ongoing efforts to deter any association with the PMOI. The spread of fake news about PMOI members abroad and recent legal summons to prosecute 104 MEK members showcases the regime’s desperation.

Despite the oppressive tactics, the PMOI’s resolve remains unbroken, evident in the sustained activities of the MEK Resistance Units, their network of loyalists. Over the past week, they’ve held demonstrations and protests in various cities, reinforcing their commitment to overthrow the current regime.

In Tehran, the Resistance Units have displayed posters bearing powerful quotes from Iranian Resistance leaders, Massoud Rajavi and NCRI president-elect Maryam Rajavi. Their messages, advocating for uprising and liberation, are clear indicators of their intent.

Videos have also emerged showing Resistance Units members proudly showcasing posters of their leaders, undeterred by the regime’s investment in surveillance.

Cities like Gorgan, Shiraz, Isfahan, Karaj, and many others witnessed similar activities. Messages of revolution, resistance, and hope resonated through placards and chants, a testament to the people’s spirit.

Despite the regime’s efforts to stifle opposition and dissent, the message from the Resistance Units and PMOI supporters is unequivocal: their journey is towards revolution, and a regime change is their singular focus.
