Despite enduring nearly four years of severe conditions in the Iranian regime’s prisons since their arrest in 2020, these two young men continue to embody the spirit of resistance that has historically defined Iran’s student movements.

In their open letter, Moradi and Younesi underscore the pivotal role students have played in the country’s uprisings. “Last year, students proved that they are an important part of the uprising and the events that followed,” they stated, emphasizing the ongoing struggle against oppression. The pair highlighted the collective aspiration for a “real republic and a democratic republic,” rejecting any form of dictatorship, be it from the Shah or the mullahs.

Reflecting on the current climate in Iran, they observed, “The Islamic Republic, in its fear of the next uprising that can continue until we reach freedom, is on the one hand resorting to mass executions and arrests and on the other hand is trying to spread despair.” This statement lays bare the regime’s tactics of repression and control, echoing the resilience that has been a hallmark of Iranian student movements since the 1999 uprising.

The background of these two students is as remarkable as their current plight. Younesi, a decorated academic, clinched the gold medal at the 12th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in China in 2018, along with other national accolades in previous years. Moradi, too, is an Olympiad silver medalist, showcasing their intellectual prowess and potential.

Moradi and Younesi’s incarceration has been marked by grave injustices. The Iranian regime’s judiciary spokesperson, Gholam-Hossein Esmaili, accused them of associating with the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and engaging in “diversionary actions” and “attempting to carry out sabotage operations.” However, these allegations have been widely criticized as being politically motivated and lacking substantive evidence.

Their letter poignantly commemorates the sacrifices of those like Mahsa [Amini] and Armita [Geravand], victims of the regime’s relentless war against its own people. “This is a war whose victims… and all those who were executed or shot,” they wrote, shedding light on the harsh realities faced by many Iranians. Their message, a beacon of hope and resistance, resonates not only within the walls of their prison but also across the globe, inspiring all those who stand for liberty and justice.

Sentenced to 16 years in prison, Moradi and Younesi's fortitude in the face of adversity is a testament to the enduring spirit of Iran's youth, who continue to yearn for freedom and democracy amidst a backdrop of repression and hardship.
