The prisoners Behrouz Ehsani, 69, Mehdi Hassani, 48, and Mohammad Javad Vafaee Thani, 29 face execution after brief trials that have been criticized for lacking basic legal standards.
The timing of these sentences, coinciding with the second anniversary of the 2022 nationwide uprising, raises concerns about the regime’s motivations. Analysts suggest the judiciary is using harsh measures to prevent further unrest. In their statement, the political prisoners urged international human rights organizations to take immediate action, warning of the imminent threat of execution for these men.
The trials for Ehsani, Hassani, and Vafaee Thani were overseen by Judge Iman Afshari, who was notorious for presiding over politically charged cases. They were charged with “rebellion,” “moharebeh” (waging war against God), and “corruption on Earth,” accusations often used to suppress dissent.

Ehsani, arrested in December 2022, was subjected to torture in Tehran’s infamous Evin Prison. Similarly, Hassani, detained three months earlier, endured both physical and psychological abuse. Vafaee Thani, a boxing champion from Mashhad, was arrested in March 2020 and has faced multiple death sentences since.
His charges included arson and destruction of government property, though his supporters argue these accusations are politically motivated.Iranian political prisoners have warned that the regime’s actions are not isolated incidents but part of a broader strategy to silence opposition and quash growing public discontent.

A Growing Call for International Action
In their statement, they called on the global community to intervene, emphasizing the role of international pressure in preventing executions. “We condemn the issuance of death sentences in general and specifically warn of the imminent threat of execution against these three political prisoners,” they said, urging swift global action.
The statement from Ghezel Hesar Prison is a reminder of the ongoing repression in Iran, where the judiciary continues to use torture and death sentences as tools of political control. As the Iranian regime faces increasing pressure from both domestic uprisings and international scrutiny, the fate of these prisoners may serve as a critical test of the global community’s commitment to human rights.
