Khamenei attempts to boost IRGC morale amid growing discontent

On Thursday, August 17, Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei met with the IRGC commander, aiming to rejuvenate the spirit of his forces amidst rising domestic disdain and international reproach concerning the regime's actions.

Addressing the growing clout of the Iranian Resistance on the world political stage, and its efforts to label the IRGC as a terror outfit, Khamenei declared, “IRGC is the world’s premier anti-terrorist organization.”

Elucidating on the pivotal role of the IRGC in sustaining the regime, Khamenei inquired, “Who quelled these upheavals, calamities, and turmoil, safeguarding the populace? Who defended the citizens of regions like Kurdistan, Baluchestan, and others from such disturbances? Who shielded Tehran’s denizens from a large-scale terror attack? It was the IRGC.”

Given the volatile and tense social climate, Khamenei’s increasing dependence on the IRGC and Basij forces is evident. Consequently, he has granted them unbridled power to suppress dissent and amass wealth. However, the masses remain unswayed by Khamenei’s words, recognizing that the root of their grievances lies in his autocratic policies implemented by the IRGC and Basij. This recognition is fueling an ever-mounting tension in the nation.

Such hyperbolic pronouncements by Khamenei highlight the pressing circumstances that compelled him to resort to such rhetoric.

The shockwaves of the 2022 uprising linger. In an endeavor to stem further desertions and bolster his troops’ spirit, Khamenei asserted, “We have surmounted the most challenging phase and are on the brink of the pinnacle.” He concurrently cautioned his forces that “now is not the moment for fatigue or disillusionment.”

The combustible societal milieu, combined with the unchecked oppressive and avaricious actions of the IRGC under Ebrahim Raisi’s governance, has led to growing dissent even within the regime’s echelons.

This escalating unrest has left Khamenei anxious, prompting him to make disingenuous overtures to the “underprivileged classes,” emphasizing, “Our current obligation… is to support the populace, particularly the less fortunate.”

In a plea for internal coherence, Khamenei called for “national unity” among the various regime factions, stating, “Critiques are acceptable, but they must be couched in trust.”

Nevertheless, Khamenei’s endeavors to normalize the situation and motivate his troops seem counterproductive. As noted by government economist Mohsen Renani on State TV on August 2, “The regime’s very foundation is infested and crumbling. Its decline is inevitable.”
