On November 21, 2024, the Australian Federal Parliament hosted a groundbreaking conference, “Iran Update: Democratic Options During Heightened Crisis,” uniting prominent lawmakers, activists, and religious leaders to address the threats posed by Iran’s clerical regime.

Convened by Shadow Housing Minister Michael Sukkar, the event underscored Australia’s solidarity with the Iranian people and their pursuit of democracy and justice. Special guest Alireza Jafarzadeh, Deputy Director of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI-US), joined via video link from Washington, D.C., presenting a compelling keynote address on Iran’s escalating human rights abuses and aggressive policies.

Moderated by Peter Murphy of the Australian Supporters of Democracy in Iran, the conference outlined strategies to combat the regime’s oppression, including calls to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

Unified Call for Action

Speakers from diverse political and social spheres highlighted the Iranian regime’s human rights violations, state-sponsored terrorism, and regional destabilization. Senator Paul Scarr (Liberal Party) emphasized the necessity of labeling the IRGC as a terrorist entity, urging the Australian government to counter the regime’s influence and protect Iranian dissidents. “Designating the IRGC is crucial to combating state-sponsored terrorism,” he stated.

Andrew Wallace MP echoed these sentiments, underscoring the need to block the activities of Iranian regime agents within Australia. Meanwhile, Senator David Shoebridge (Greens) described international denunciation of Iran’s oppressive actions as a global duty, pledging his commitment to press for the IRGC’s designation.

Reverend Bill Crews and Reverend Brian Medway lent a moral dimension to the discussions, calling for global solidarity with Iranian women and broader support for justice and freedom. Reverend Medway condemned the regime’s escalating executions, which have surpassed 800 in 2024 alone, and urged the Australian government to take decisive action.

The Ten-Point Plan

Alireza Jafarzadeh’s keynote speech centered on the NCRI’s Ten-Point Plan, envisioning a secular, non-nuclear Iran that upholds human rights and gender equality. He highlighted the regime’s reliance on exporting terrorism and suppressing its people to maintain power. Jafarzadeh urged Australia to support the Iranian Resistance, expel regime agents, and lead international efforts to isolate Tehran. “Iran’s future lies in the hands of its people and its organized resistance,” he concluded.

Key Outcomes and Future Directions

The conference culminated in a unified call for decisive action: designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, expel regime agents from Australia, and back the NCRI’s democratic vision for Iran. Moderator Peter Murphy closed the event by emphasizing the urgency of international solidarity in promoting democracy and justice in Iran.

This landmark conference marked a pivotal moment in Australia’s growing commitment to supporting the Iranian people, amplifying global efforts to challenge tyranny and champion human rights.
